Ayala Corp.'s information technology (IT) arm, iAyala, will be putting up its own Internet Data Center (IDC), a move intensifying competition among local firms banking on the potential of data trend. iAyala executive director Jonathan R. Madrid said in a recent phone interview the company is currently in talks with potential partners for the planned IDC. "It is still undergoing some studies but it is already in the works," Mr. Madrid told BusinessWorld. He, however, declined to provide a time-table for the project. Mr. Madrid pointed out that compared with the PhP1.6-B ($35.16 M at PhP45.501=$1) IDC planned by telecommunications giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), iAyala's planned data center will be more modest in proportion. "I don't think we will be spending that much. It will be a more modest center," Mr. Madrid said. PLDT officially announced the formation of its IDC last June, with the allocation coming from the company's 2000 budget. The First Pacific-owned telephone giant said the creation of the IDC is in preparation for the expected 20% increase in data traffic within the next few years. The IDC -- patterned after the "outsourcing" scheme for data networks in the United States -- will provide clients of limited equipment and capital their own Internet and multimedia platforms. A small and medium enterprise can lease a portion of the IDC, for a certain period of time, for its own data requirements. PLDT's equipment and software system are provided by two US software giants, Sun Microsystems Pte., Ltd. and Microsoft Corp. "Well admittedly, PLDT came out with (the idea) first. But we will be putting up our own soon," Mr. Madrid said.
