AC ( 04/06/1999 : BW ) Database manufacturer SPI Technologies, Inc. is said to be planning to participate in the government's Land Registration Billing project which explains the company's sudden interest to tap Ayala Corp. for a possible cooperation. Talks are rife that SPI is interested in the said government project as early as October last year and has since been on the lookout for partnership with possible contractors. Industry sources said the project poses an opportunity for the company to tie up with Ayala which is also engaged in the electronics business through subsidiary Integrated Microelectronics, Inc. An SPI official earlier said the company has recently invited the conglomerate for a presentation which was not only intended to discuss SPI's various business lines but opportunities for cooperation as well. SPI business development group manager Robert C. Cabato, however, said the meeting was exploratory in nature and that the two firms have not yet finalized any agreement.

Ayala Corp officials were not immediately available for comment. A source from a brokerage house said Ayala Corp. has confirmed its interest in SPI saying it is seriously looking at the possible cooperation. The LRB project, sources said, would require software and data encoding expertise in the creation of a system for filing land titles. The project would also involve mapping services for the country's topography. Another SPI source said the company has considered participating in the said project but the management is still hesitant due to the "political bottlenecks" associated with the awarding of contracts.
