AC ( 03/25/1999 : BW ) Ayala Corp. is being tapped by listed database manufacturer SPI Technologies, Inc. for a possible cooperation in the latter's infor- mation technology-related businesses. Officials from the two firms said that Ayala was recently invited by the management of SPI for a company presentation. During the meeting, SPI's various business lines were discussed as well as opportunities where both parties could work together. SPI business development group manager Robert C. Cabato, however, said the meeting was "exploratory" and no definite agreement has been achieved so far. "This is what we normally do. We had a recent meeting here at SPI but this is just part of what we usually do. We continue to receive visitors from all sectors to discuss opportunities. We look at projects, do presentations for potential partners from the US or institutional investors," he said. The SPI official said the scope of the discussion was general in nature and was not intended to focus on a specific business line.

He, however, denied SPI has plans to secure a tie-up with the conglomerate. "We have been talking to existing partners, existing customers who are willing to be potential partners -- third parties who want to be partners. We're looking at anyone who can help us move up the value chain," he said. For his part, Ayala Corp. vice-president for strategic planning Rufino Luis Manotok said the two companies met to discuss possible areas of cooperation citing marketing efforts in the information technology business as an example. "We've been talking to them to find out whether there could be areas by which we can cooperate. To see if what they are doing has something to do with what we are doing," he said.
